Course Overview

The General English course is designed to prepare students for conversation, everyday situations and daily interactions that take place when travelling or living in an English-speaking country. Students learn and practice the four macro-skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in an interactive environment. Levels of difficulty increase over the duration of the course to assist students to develop their skills and to be more confident and fluent in English.
The course is structured into 6 levels (Starter, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced). Each of the levels has a duration of 10 weeks (the study period) and the course in total is 70 weeks (including holidays). The specific outcomes for each level are detailed in the section of this curriculum document on course outcomes.

The profile of the target learner group is as follows:
  • Age group: 18 and above.
  • Nationality: Students come from a range of overseas countries.
  • Aims: The target group is seeking to develop their English language skills so as to be able to communicate effectively in a range of situations.
  • Experience: The target group may have little or no understanding of the Australian way of life or cultural expectations.
Delivery Mode
This course is delivered face-to-face at Level 5, 250 Collins St, Melbourne, VIC 3000. Weekly scheduled face-to-face class hours for attendance at Australian Federation College is 20 hours.

Course Duration and Timetabling

This course is delivered over 10-70 weeks (including holidays).
This course is offered on the following days and times subject to enrolment of students:
Shift 1:
Monday – Thursday: 8:30 am – 1:30 pm
Shift 2:
Monday – Thursday: 4:30 pm – 9.30 pm
Students will be advised of the timing prior commencement of their term.

Entry Requirements
Australian Federation College has the following entry requirements:
  • Be at least 18 years of age at course commencement;
  • For students studying this course alone, there is no IELTS requirement.
  • Students will be assessed by Australian Federation College during the enrolment process using the Oxford Placement Test and an interview. They will then be placed in the appropriate class level which is best suited to their needs.
Assessment Overview
Students are placed at the appropriate level (Starter, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced) and will progress from one level to the next subject to achieving a satisfactory pass mark in the assessments. Assessments will be:
  • Written; and
  • Spoken
